A former Cr-PGE (Pt-Pd-Ir-Rh-Ru) mine located in sec. 12, T8N, R9E, MDM, 2.2 km (1.4 miles) S of Brandon Corner and about 3 miles E of Latrobe, on the ridge between Slug Gulch and Little Indian Creek, on private land. No mine is shown on topo map; location given is for the PGE sample site location. Opened and closed in 1918. Operated by Mr. Robert D. Domecq, et al, and by the Brandon Brothers during WWI. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is a Late Jurassic podiform chromite deposit (Deposit Model: 15: Podiform chromite [minor]), hosted in dunite (ultramafic rocks are serpentinized). The ore body is podiform with a width of 1.22 meters and a length of 3.05 meters. Ore control was magmatic segregation. Associated rocks include Late Jurassic Bear Mountain Ophiolite (peridotite). Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
Local geologic structures include shearing. The contact of chromite pods and dunite is sheared.
Tectonic Structures include the Sierra Foothills Accreted Terrane.
Workings include surface openings comprised of 3 open cuts, 10 to 25 feet long.
Production was 4 carloads of ore produced in 1918. This mine has been idle since then and the workings are caved. A small amount of chromite remains in the deepest pit.
Analytical data results: 1 PGE analysis: Pt = 130 Parts per billion (PPB); Pd = 186 PPB; Ir = 200 PPB; Ru = 230 PPB; and Rh = 7 PPB.
