A silica occurrence/pit located in the SE¼NW¼SE¼ sec. 8, T1N, R1W, MDM, 5.0 km (3.1 miles) W of Clayton (3 miles SE of Concord). Operated by Henry Cowell Lime and Cement Company. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters. Several hundred tons of sand per month were being removed. In 1958, the pit was being worked by the Silver Sand Company and Charles Laws. Material produced was about 45 cubic yards per day, and was being used as fill sand for asbestos shingles. Most of the sand was subsequently used as fill material under the concrete foundation slabs of homes.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10187440, that is lacking an literature references, states that this locality is a Ag deposit. This is quite apparently an egregious error based on the name of one of the operators (Silver Sand Company).
Mineralization is a sand deposit. Local rocks include Eocene marine rocks.
Workings include surface openings comprised of a pit.
