A former Cr-PGE (Pd-Pt-Ru-Rh-Ir) mine located in sec. 19, T12S, R25E, MDM, 2.9 km (1.8 miles) SE of Hog Mountain (coordinates of record) (on the extreme SE end of the moubntain adjacent to Pine Flat Lake (reservoir), and SE of Watts Valley, on National Forest/U.S. Army Corps of Engineers land. Owned by C. E. Hull (1951). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.

Mineralization is a Pennsylvanian Cr-PGE deposit (Deposit model: 15: Podiform chromite (minor)), hosted in dunite. The ore body is disseminated, veinlets, stringers & lenses. It strikes N80W and dips 60SW. Controls for
ore emplacement include magmatic segregation. Peridotite lies W of the gabbro mass. The ore parallels poorly developed schistosity in serpentine. Local alteration involves the serpentinization of ultramafic rocks in small stringers and lenses from 1 inch (2.5 cm) to several feet thick. Associated rocks include Pennsylvanian gabbro, peridotite (Kings-Kaweah Ophiolite) & granite. Local rocks include Mesozoic gabbroic rocks, unit 2 (undivided).

Local geologic structures include: Fault offsets ore zone 10-15 feet between the two large open cuts.

The chromite deposits of Watts Valley occur on the eastern limb of a synclinal, NE-plunging, ultramafic sill. The eastern limb, known as Hog Mountain, is a little over 1 mile wide, while the western limb, which forms Red Mountain, averages 3 miles wide. The 2 limbs join to the NW and together form a discontinuous, triangular exposure of peridotite 10 miles long and 8 miles wide across the base.

Related tectonic structures: Sierra foothills accreted terrane.

Workings include surface and underground openings with a length of 22.86 meters and an overall depth of 7.62 meters, and consist of an open pit (35 x 5 to 10 feet) formed around the collar of the shaft. Additional workings include another open cut (50 x 10 to 12 feet), an adit, an open stope conencting the larger open cut and the adit, plus 2 additional small open cuts.

Analytical data results: 1 PGE analysis: Pt = 80 ppb; Pd = <1 ppb; Ir = 60 ppb; Ru = 170 ppb; Rh = 4 ppb.
