A Cr occurrence/claim/mine located in secs. 10 & 15, T12S, R24E, MDM, 2.1 km (1.3 miles) WNW of Hog Mountain (coordinates of record), on the mountain, and S of Watts Valley. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a chromite deposit hosted in serpentinite. The ore body is irregular and lenticular in form at a thickness of 1.52 meters and adepth-to-top of 6.1 meters,a width of 2.44 meters and a length of 6.1 meters. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
The chromite deposits of Watts Valley occur on the eastern limb of a synclinal, NE-plunging, ultramafic sill. The eastern limb, known as Hog Mountain, is a little over 1 mile wide, while the western limb, which forms Red Mountain, averages 3 miles wide. The 2 limbs join to the NW and together form a discontinuous, triangular exposure of peridotite 10 miles long and 8 miles wide across the base.
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a 35 foot deep shaft and an open cut 25 feet long, an adit 20 feet long, and a shallow winze 3 feet deep.
