A former Cr occurrence/claim/mine located in sec. 15, T12S, R24E, MDM, 2.3 km (1.4 miles) WNW of Hog Mountain (coordinates of record), on the mountain, and S of Watts Valley (300 feet E of the Black Joe Mine), on private land. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a Cr deposit with a lenticular ore body. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
The chromite deposits of Watts Valley occur on the eastern limb of a synclinal, NE-plunging, ultramafic sill. The eastern limb, known as Hog Mountain, is a little over 1 mile wide, while the western limb, which forms Red Mountain, averages 3 miles wide. The 2 limbs join to the NW and together form a discontinuous, triangular exposure of peridotite 10 miles long and 8 miles wide across the base.
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall length of 12.19 meters and an overall width of 2.44 meters. The long dimension of the cut is parallel to the schistosity of the serpentine, which trends N50W and dips 70N.
Production unknown; no reserves indicated.
