A former Cr occurrence/mine located in sec. 15, T12S, R24E, MDM, 2.4 km (1.5 miles) WNW of Hog Mountain (coordinates of record), along the crest of the mountain, and S of Watts Valley, on private land. 1 of 6 claims in the Jack Sprat group. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in serpentinite. The ore body is irregular in form. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
The chromite deposits of Watts Valley occur on the eastern limb of a synclinal, NE-plunging, ultramafic sill. The eastern limb, known as Hog Mountain, is a little over 1 mile wide, while the western limb, which forms Red Mountain, averages 3 miles wide. The 2 limbs join to the NW and together form a discontinuous, triangular exposure of peridotite 10 miles long and 8 miles wide across the base.
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of an open cut 27 feet long, a 33 foot adit, and a winze 35 feet deep. Ore was mined at the rate of 2 tons per day during production years.
Production data are found in: Rynearson, Garn Arthur (1948): 89.
Production statistics: Year: 1919 (period 1917-1919): ^40% Cr2O3.
