A former Cr mine located in secs. 14 & 15, T12S, R24E, MDM, 2.1 km (1.3 miles) WNW of Hog Mountain (coordinates of record) (on the western slope of the mountain). No. 1 of 5 claims in the Saddle Blanket group.
Mineralization is hosted in serpentinite. The ore is irregular masses and lenses. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
The chromite deposits of Watts Valley occur on the eastern limb of a synclinal, NE-plunging, ultramafic sill. The eastern limb, known as Hog Mountain, is a little over 1 mile wide, while the western limb, which forms Red Mountain, averages 3 miles wide. The 2 limbs join to the NW and together form a discontinuous, triangular exposure of peridotite 10 miles long and 8 miles wide across the base.
Workings include surface and underground openings. There are 2 workings on the Black Hawk property. The upper workings include an open cut 60 feet long, 25 feet wide and deep, and an adit 43 feet long. The lower workings include an open cut 20 feet long at the portal of a 30 foot long adit, plus an open cut 15 feet long 40 feet below an adit 5 feet long.
Little ore was left exposed in the workings after the production of 1915.
