A Cr occurrence/prospect/mine located in secs. 23 & 24, T11S, R23E, MDM, 2.5 km (8,200 feet) E of Humphreys Station (¼ mile S of the Brown Bird claim), in the Watts Valley area. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
NOTE: MRDS database file #10236449 contains data consistent with the other files pertaining to this locality except that it states the primary commodity is REE. The reference presented in that file is the very same reference presented in the other files (Rynearson, 1948), which pertains to Cr deposits.
Mineralization is a Cr deposit with massive, low-grade ore. The ore body is lenticular in form with a depth-to-bottom of 1.12 meters and a width of 0.36 meter. Local rocks include ultramafic rocks, chiefly Mesozoic, unit 2 (Western Sierra Nevada and Klamath Mountains).
The chromite deposits of Watts Valley occur on the eastern limb of a synclinal, NE-plunging, ultramafic sill. The eastern limb, known as Hog Mountain, is a little over 1 mile wide, while the western limb, which forms Red Mountain, averages 3 miles wide. The 2 limbs join to the NW and together form a discontinuous, triangular exposure of peridotite 10 miles long and 8 miles wide across the base.
Workings include surface and underground openings with an overall depth of 6.1 meters and an overall length of 6.1 meters, and comprised of an underhand stope.
A sample taken from 18 tons of ore piled on the dump gave 29.2% Cr2O3. The ore was estimated to contain 33% Cr2O3 and is low-grade.
Approximately 2 long tons of nodular ore and small lenses of massive ore are exposed in the cut. Deposit is mined out.
