A former placer/drift Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 30, T4N, R12E, MDM, 1.9 km (1.2 miles) WNW of Kentucky House and 3.0 km (9,800 feet) SSW of San Andreas, along the South Fork Calaveras River (4 miles by road W of San Andreas; tailings in the SW¼NE¼ of the sec. (map GQ-222), on private property. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is compacted gravel mixed with a little sand and clay but few boulders. TThere are three distinct gravel channels. The deposit is evidently the remnant of an ancient channelm or old benches of the Calaveras River. Two of the channel runs have a total width of 350 feet of gravel, from 26 to 40 feet in depth. The bedrock is slate. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains) and/or Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include surface and underground openings/operations. The deposit was worked by drifting in the 1920's; by gasoline-powered shovel and moveabl;e washing plant in 1936; and by 382 feet of shafts and drifts in 1937. Worked about 1921 by means of 3 shallow shafts and 2 tunnels. In 1936 the gravel was to be mined by means of a Koehring gasoline shovel and was expected to treat 600 cubic yards of gravel per day.
