A Mn occurrence located in the S½ sec. 18, T4N, R14E, MDM, 1.7 km (1.0 mile) SSW of Sheep Ranch, SW of Mineral Peak and on a ridge N of San Antonio Creek (0.2 mile S of the road leading from Sheep Ranch to San Andreas). Discovered in 1942. Owned by E. G Staples, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
The ore body strikes N5-30W and dips 60-70E. A bed of massive metachert contains pockets and lenses of partially oxidized brown manganese garnet. The metachert is 2 to 4.5 feet thick and is exposed on the surface for a length of 50 feet. The granet produces a crumbly, brownish-black, low-grade oxide ore. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface openings comprised by a pit 4 feet diameter by 6 feet deep.
Analytical data results: Assays quoted as 29% Mn and 40% silica.
