A former Au occurrence/drift mine located in the NW¼ sec. 2, T5N, R13E, MDM, 3.5 km (2.2 miles) S of Railroad Flat (near the head of Jack Nelson Creek). First operated in 1884. Owned by Lee and H. L. Burch. MRDS database accuracy for this location is not stated.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit on a branch of the Fort Mountain paleochannel. The channel trends E, is 40 to 100 feet wide and 80 to 100 feet deep. It contains an average of 9 feet of blue gravel covered by sand, gravel and rhyolite. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include underground openings comprised of 2 shafts, 200 feet of tunnels and drifts driven by 1889. A third shaft was sunk in 1890. A 2-stamp mill was erected in 1899; a 5-stamp mill in 1902. There was some small scale work after 1920.
Yield was estimated variously at $6 to $10 (period values) per cubic yard.
