A former hydraulic/drift placer Au mine located in sec. 28, T4N, R12E, MDM, 1.6 km (1.0 mile) ENE of Kentucky House, and 3.4 km (2.1 miles) SE of San Andreas, along highway 49, on private land. Owned by F.V. Hedrick, et al. Operated during, and prior to, 1872, in the 1900's and in the 1910's.MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located on the Central Hill channel. The channel is shallow and 400 feet wide. The center portion is 8 feet deeper, 100 feet wide. Pre-rhyolite gravel is cut by the channel containing rhyolite tuff and gravel. Both channels have pay gravel and are capped by a fine oxidized gravel. Local rocks include undivided pre-Cenozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 2 (undivided) and/or Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings. Developed by hydraulic pits, 5 shafts 50 to 120 feet deep, and 3 tunnels 400 feet long.
Production information: By 1872, 2,963 cubic yards of gravel had yielded $1,450 (period values). About 3,200 cubic yards ofm gravel were washed in the 1900's.
