A former Cr mine located in the SE¼SW¼ sec. 5, T4N, R11E, MDM, about 6 km SE of Camp Pardee (3 miles NE of Valley Springs, just N of the crest of a small, rocky hill). Discovered and first operated in 1918. Owned by Jefferson Gillam, California (1976). Lessed/operated by A.C. Kerley and Walton Van Winkle, California (1976). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
The ore body strikes and dips N30W and is in a shear zone and is irregular in form. The primary mode of origin was magmatic differentiation. Primary ore control was lithology and the secondary control was faulting. Wallrock alteration is moderate (carbonitization). The ore occurs in small, irregular bodies enclosed in hard, dense serpentine, carrying 31 to 35% Cr2O3. Local rocks include Miocene nonmarine rocks.
Workings include surface and underground openings. Developed by a long, narrow 100 foot long open cut and a 22 foot deep shaft.
The mine has been idle since 1918. Said to be mined out.
Produced 72 long tons of ore were produced.
