A placer drift Au occurrence/prospect/mine located in the center of sec. 23, T5N, R11E, MDM, about 3.35 km N of Golden Gate Hill on the divide between Poorman Gulch and Chili Gulch (2½ miles SW of Mokelumne Hill (town)). Operated in the 1920's, again unsuccessfully in 1931. Further developed during the period 1934 to 1936. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit thought to be located on the Concentrator or Corral Flat paleochannels. The shaft passed through 60 feet of wash rock, 50 feet of hard-rock flow, 40 feet of white lava, and 150 feet of brown, clayey lava interspersed with gravel, to the slate and soapstone bedrock. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 1 (Western Sierra Nevada and Western Klamath Mountains).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 332 foot deep vertical shaft. Crosscuts and drifts were driven from the shaft. A total of 9 men were employed on two shifts (later period of activity ?).
Coarse, smooth Au at 850 fine is in and close to the bedrock. Yieled an average of $2 to $3 (period values) per cubic yard.
