A former lode Au mine located in the NE¼ (estimated) sec. 17, T4N, R12E, MDM, 2.8 km (9,200 feet) NNE of San Andreas. Operated in 1852, and worked intermittently during the 1860's, 1870's, 1880's, 1890's & 1900's. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in schist and amphibolite. The ore body strikes NW and dips NE at a thickness of 2.44 meters. Calaveras slate lies just to the E. There are 2 principal vein systems 100 to 135 feet apart. Each is comprised of quartz stringers. The W vein averages 2 feet thick and the E vein is 4 to 8 feet thick. Local rocks include Paleozoic metavolcanic rocks, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada Foothills).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 230 foot inclined shaft (54 degrees incline) sunk on the W vein and with levels at 50, 100 and 200 feet. Crosscuts extend to the E vein on the 100 and 200 levels. There is also an adit on the W vein.
Production data are found in: Logan, Clarence August (1934), and, Clark, Wm. B. & P.A. Lydon (1962).
