A placer drift Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 24, T5N, R11E, MDM, about 3.65 km S of Mokelumne Hill (town), along Woman Gulch, S of the McSorley Ranch. Operated intermittently during the periods 1895-1914, 1934-1937, 1950, and 1957-1958. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit located in a paleochannel that is overlain with a cemented conglomerate and a basalt lava flow. The gold is coarse and mainly on the bedrock, which consists of a soft, decomposed slate. Many boulders included in the gravel. Local rocks include Tertiary pyroclastic and volcanic mudflow deposits, unit 9 (Cascade Range) and/or Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 250 foot adit with drifts.
Virgin ground was said to average $3 to $6 per cubic yard (period values). 1,000 cubic yards of gravel yielded $6,000 (period values) in 1937.
Present operators (??) were prospecting for the unworked portion of the channel and have obtained some production from remaining loose gravel pockets in old workings, which have been crosscut.
