A Fe-Mn occurrence located in sec. 14, T4N, R13E, MDM, 0.4 km (0.2 mile) SW of Cave City, and about 3.5 miles SE of Mountain Ranch (beyond the former site of Cave City, on a fairly steep slope near the top of a ridge) (location approximate). Owned by The Thomas Brothers, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
NOTE: USGS MRDS database file #10029172 provides MRDS file #10260250 as a related file for this locality. In fact, that latter file is totally unrelated to this occurrence.
Mineralization is a reddish brown iron oxide with very small amounts of manganese oxides in sericite schist of the Calaveras Series. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface openings comprised of a pit 4 feet by 3 feet by 8 feet deep.
Analytical data results: Ore grade is 6% to 7% Mn.
