A former placer drift Au occurrence/mine located in the NE¼ sec. 26, T6N, R13E, MDM, 0/2 km (0.1 mile) N of Railroad Flat proper. Operated prior to 1900. 1,500 cubic yards of gravel were washed in 1900. Operated intermittently since April, 1932. Two men were employed. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 100 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit said to be located on the Fort Mountain paleochannel, on a bend in the channel. The gravel is loose and the Au is very fine and is accompanied by considerable black sand and some boulders. The bedrock is slate. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada) and/or Tertiary nonmarine rocks, undivided.
Workings include underground openings comprised of a 200 foot inclined shaft and drifts northward, up through the channel for about 400 feet.
Gravel said to average $1.50 per cubic yard (period values).
