A former lode Au occurrence/mine located in sec. 19, T6N, R11E, MDM, about 7.6 km NNW of Goat Hill, and 1.6 km (1.0 mile) SSW of Martell (Mother Lode Belt), S of highway 88. John J. Ratto and C. R. Daggett were producing some very good ore from the 300 foot level of this mine in 1924. It was worked by Sierra Metals in 1927. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.

USGS MRDS database note: Note that references show the location as sec. 9, T5N, R11E, MDM, but the geographical description of the location is as hown above. An unpublished map for the Conservation Division shows a prospect in the N½NE¼, but this would not seem to be correct location. Topo maps Sutter Creek (1962) and Jackson, show a Ratto Mine in the SW¼ sec. 16, this township. Maybe that is the correct location of the Sunset Mine.

Local rocks include Mesozoic volcanic rocks, unit 2 (Western Sierra Foothills and Western Klamath Mountains).

Workings included unspecified underground openings at least 300 feet deep.
