A former placer Au occurrence/mine located in the SE¼ sec. 23, T7N, R12E, MDM, 1.1 km (0.7 mile) E of Volcano, along Sutter Creek (at the confluence of Sutter Creek with Pioneer Creek), on private land. Operated by Frank and Peter Garibaldi. Operated intermittently since 1940 by the owners. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters.
Mineralization is a placer Au deposit hosted in gravels. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface operations. Topsoil was bulldozed to one side. A dragline dredge was employed. A washing plant with a capacity of 40 cubic yards per hour was installed. After an area had been mined, the gravel piles were leveled and the topsoil bulldozed back over the gravels.
Gold recovery varied from 10 to 20 cents (period values) per cubic yard.
