A former Mn occurrence/mine located in the center sec. 6, T4S, R4E, MDM, 3.6 km (2.2 miles) SE of Tesla, in Mitchell Canyon (Ravine). Discovered in 1891. Owned by P. and J. P. Connolly (1950). Owned by J. Taylor and Company, California (1974) and by H. H. Pitcher, California (1974). MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
Mineralization is hosted in chert and Late Cretaceous sandstone of the Franciscan Complex. The ore body is 1.07 meters wide. The ore body is 20 inches wide and at a 35 foot depth is 3.5 feet wide in quartzose gangue. The bed strikes E and dips steeply S. The footwall is chert and the hanging wall is sandstone. The ore is most abundant in pockets within the sandstone. Manganese content ranges from 41% near surface to 53% at depth. The ore is black oxides, at first hard and flinty, but at depth soft, bluish ore. Local rocks include rocks of the Franciscan Complex, unit 1 (Coast Ranges).
Workings include surface and underground openings including a shaft.
Production prior to 1892 was said to be 300 tons. More than 1,400 tons were shipped from 1891-1900. A small shipment was made in 1916.
