Buckeye Mine
A former Hg mine located 1.4 km (4,500 feet) SW of Wilbur Springs and S of the Manzanita Mine. Discovered 1875. Owned by Mrs. A. A. Gibson. Produced 1874 (sic) - 1877, 1932, 1936-1937, and 1942-1943. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 10 meters.
Mineralization is a Hg deposit hosted in Late Jurassic serpentinite. The ore body forms pockets, strikes NW and dips 60SW at a width of 4.88 meters. Controls for ore emplacement included opalized, brecciated serpentine. Local structures include a serpentine-shale contact. Alteration is local and involves the opalization of serpentine. Local rocks include Jurassic marine rocks, unit 2 (Coast Ranges).
Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 143.26 meters. The shaft is now caved and flooded.
