A clay occurrence/former mine located in the NW¼ sec. 25 & 26, T21N, R29E, G&SRM, 9.1 km (5.7 miles) ESE of Sanders, 10.3 km (6.4 miles) SSW of Houck and 13.1 km (8.1 miles) SSW of Allentown, on private land. First production occurred in 1924. Owned by the Filtrol Corporation, California. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 500 meters.
Mineralization is clay in Pliocene latite ash in the Bidahochi Formation. a 4 foot thick bentonite bed is comprised chiefly of calcium montmorillonite and contains only minor quartz and feldspar impurities. The bentonite is nearly pure calcium montmorillonite with a high crystallinity and a large surface area that produces extraordinary sorptive properties. Local alteration involves vitric latite ash. Local rocks include Pliocene to middle Miocene deposits.
Regional geologic structures include the Defiance Uplift.
Production was considerable. The average overburden of the mined deposits was nearly 100 feet in 1987 and stripping costs were high.
