Nakai Chee Begay Mine
A former U-V occurrence/mine located in the approximate SE¼ sec. 36, T38N, R31E, G&SRM, 4.6 km (2.8 miles) S of Red Valley and 0.35 miles W of Red Wash, about 3 miles N of the Red Rock Trading Post, near the Arizona-New Mexico state line.
Mineralization is tyuyamunite in irregular tabular layers hosted in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation (Late Jurassic claystone, siltstone and sandstone of the Salt Wash Member of Morrison Formation). Ore is found in clusters, usually associated with carbonaceous detritus. Tyuyamunite occurs in carbonaceous sandstone as rolls and pods near the base of the Salt Wash Member. Local rocks include rocks of the San Rafael Group.
Workings include unspecified underground openings.
Production was 378 tons of ore @ 0.22% U3O8; 1.44% V2O5 (1950-1953). An additional 442 tons of "no pay ore" (0.08% U3O8; 0.21% V2O5) was shipped in 1951-1953.
