Sola Strand, Sola, Rogaland, Norge
Sola Strand is the beach occupying the bay which runs roughly North - South at the end of the westerly runway at Stavanger's Sola Airport.
The beach seems to be underlain by metasediments and these are exposed at various points along the beach but notably on a promontary towards the southern end of the bay (occupied by a WWII gun emplacement), and, further south still, where the sand ends completely.
Some of the schists are highly garnetiferous, containing included and weathered almandine crystals to 15mm. Also visible are some quartz lenses, at least one of which could be seen to contain vughs lined with euhedral almandine crystals.
At the time of writing, no collecting could be undertaken due to absence of tools. June 27th 2005.
