A former underground Pb-Zn-Ag-Au-Mn-Fe-silica mine located in sec. 25, T5S, R19E, 2.5 miles NW of Imperial Mountain, about 2 km north of Aravaipa on the west slope of a low southward-trending ridge, north off Williamson Canyon, north off Arizona Gulch. Discovered 1895. Produced 1916-1955. Patented claims extend into secs. 23 & 24. Unpatented claims extend into sec. 26. Operated by J.T. Corn; A.J. Grunwell; R.G. Phillips; Aravaipa Mining; A.H. Charlson and Co.; and the Athletic Mining Co.
Mineralization is a tabular ore body hosted in Horse Mountain silicic lava and tuff with laminated quartz containing massive quartz with lead, silver, copper, gold and zinc ores. The ore zone strikes N-S and dips 83W. Ore control was faults and concentration was fissure filling.
Here the prevailing rock is andesite porphyry, intruded by a dike of rhyolite porphyry tat strikes S.20ºE., and dips 65º-75ºW. This dike, which may be traced on the surface for 3,000 feet, attains a width of about 60 feet at the Arizona shaft. It has been sheared parallel to the dip and along its walls. Its central portion contains the Arizona vein. The vein consists largely of banded to granular quartz from a few inches to about 6 feet wide, locally stained with iron and manganese oxides. In places, especially near the Arizona saft, small bodies of oxidized lead and zinc minerals with some residual galena are exposed.
According to old Aravaipa Mining Corp. maps, limestone prevailed below a depth of 500 feet, and on the 569 level an irregular drift about 250 feet long was in limestone containing lead-zinc sulphide ore.
Area structures include faults which were subsequently mineralized and block faulting trending NNW. Regional trends: minor Pre-Cretaceous E- and NE-trending folds and major Post-Cretaceous NNW-trending faults.
Workings totalled 388.62 meters in length and 176.78 meters in depth. Development is largely inaccessible. Principally it consists of drifting on an adit level and a two-compartment vertical shaft reported to be 580 feet deep. A number of short drifts, the lowest on the 569-foot level, have been driven from the shaft. The adit runs east for 600 feet, crossing the vein at 200 feet and connecting with a drift that extends 275 feet south and 40 feet north on the vein. The north drift connects with the 83 level of the Arizona vertical shaft. Production statistics were included under the Aravaipa group in USBM-ABGMT file data. Assay on the 83 level shows 10-15% Pb, 12-15 oz./ton Ag, and some Au.
