A former underground Cu-Ag deposit located in the NE¼ sec. 23, T8S, R18E (Rhodes Peak 7.5 minute topo map), about ¼ mile NE of Sombrero Butte summit, on BLM-administered land. Produced 1915-1948. Owned and operated by G.B. Hoganson, 1943-1944; Sunset Mining Company 1916-1930'S (when claims were the Sunset claims, II unpatented. Operated by Mr. David C. Hartley (1948).
Mineralization is the Battle Ax vein, hosted in diorite and related to E-W-trending fault fissures and brecciated pipes. Area structures include the E-W-trending Battle Ax vein, short E-W-trending faults and ENE-trending faults with a steep dip. A major NNW-trending fault lies west of the mine with Quaternary sediments west of the fault.
Regional features include short EW-trending faults and ENE-trending faults, steep dip.
Workings include one 175 foot deep shaft, one 75 foot deep shaft, one 64 foot deep shaft, a 600 foot long tunnel with winze 45 feet below the tunnel floor.
