The Merrimac Mining Company was organized in 1863 to work 360 acres set off from the Bohemian Mine. A shaft was sunk by Bohemian prior to Merrimac forming and recovered approximately four tons of barrel copper before letting the shaft fill with water. When Merrimac was formed, they dewatered this shaft, and sank a second shaft on the property. However, the company never sank their shafts deep enough to intersect the rich copper bearing lodes, presumably because they didn't have the finances to do so. By 1878, work by the company ceased and the site was leased on tribute. Tribute workers focused on an old pit, as well as sank a third shaft that reached the Ridge vein. In 1883, the company put the site on the market for sale. The property was merged with other local mines to form the Mass Consolidated Mining Company in 1899.
