Copper #1
A former Cu-Fe-U occurrence/mine located in secs. 34 & 35, T28N, R1E, G&SRM, 1.2 km (0.8 mile) ENE of Willaha. Scarborough states that Copper No. 1 is located in the NW¼SE¼ sec. 35 and the Willaha group is in sec. 26.
Mineralization includes primary and secondary copper minerals in lenses and vugs hosted in the Late Permian Kaibab Limestone. May be controlled by fractures and undulations. A few small veins and vugs stained with iron oxide or coated with hematite contain U. Radioactive material occurs in a 2 foot zone in, and immediately underlying 6 inches of malachite mineralization in sandy Kaibab Limestone, with chert nodules along bedding planes. Halos of azurite and malachite surround chalcocite. Radioactive reading of 0.34 mr/hour. Local rocks include Permian sedimentary rocks.
Workings include surface openings with an overall length of 15.24 meters. Old Cu workings date to the early 1900's. Property contains several (5) prospect pits and trenches with a maximum depth of 15 feet. The pit is 50 x 3 x 3 feet deep.
Production of Cu up to 1954 was limited. Production from Copper #1 or Willaha group, or both, was 29 tons of ore @ 0.10% U3O8; 0.02% V2O5; 9.4% CaCO3 (1956), illegally shipped from pit on the Copper #1 under the name of Doty group.
