Small creek entering Muddy Creek 1.5 km from Chattahoochee River.

Manager's note: From the description this is very close to the Muddy Creek prospect (and may in fact be the same locality). However, since this is now submerged in Lake Sidney Lanier it may be a lost location.

The earliest reported diamond find in Georgia was made in 1843 by Dr. M. F. Stephenson while panning gold near Winns or Williams Ferry at the mouth of a small branch which enters Muddy Creek at a point about 0.5 mile (0.8 km) from its junction with the Chattahoochee River. The stone reportedly weighed over 6 carats and was on display in one of the Gainesville banks for several years. The locality was visited by Otto Veatch in January, 1908, and the remains of the old placer workings were found. The branch is about 0.75 mile (1.2 km) in length, and a close examination of its drainage basin was conducted. The only rock found was a gray granite which was locally cut by thin pegmatites and quartz veins.
