A baryte vein and layered deposit with veins 1 to 2 feet (30 to 60 cm) wide and layers 2 inches (5 cm) to 3 feet (90 cm) thick. Hosted in limestone in the Maroon formation of Permian and Pennsylvanian age.
Currently (2009) there is a claim owned by Lark and Dave Harvey who got the claim so the public could dig. There is a fee, and you must sign a waiver at the Bayou Salado Trading Post in Hartsel. They provide directions to the site.
Fee-based collecting is still possible (2024) - see https://www.mindat.org/mesg-671832.html#672983
