A baryte deposit similar to the one at the El Portal Mine and on the same structural trend several miles to the south. The area is mountainous and quite inaccessible.
A baryte deposit located in secs. 17 & 20, T4S, R20E, MDM, 3.1 km (1.9 miles) SSE of Peachtree Bar, along a ridge line W of Granite Creek and E of Devil Gulch, on private and National Forest land. Discovered in 1917. Property consisted of 3 patented claims totaling 44 acres plus 3 unpatented claims. Operated by the California Barite Corp. MRDS database stated accuracy for this location is 1,000 meters.
The baryte rock is white, granular and contains some silica. Part of the 1937 production was reported to be witherite, but none was observed in October, 1955. Local rocks include Paleozoic marine rocks, undivided, unit 4 (Western Sierra Nevada).
Workings include surface and underground openings comprised of a drift adit at least 100 feet long, which develops extensive backs and numerous surface cuts.
The only substantial production recorded was in 1937 when 800 tons were marketed. In 1942 owners reported that 2,000 tons remained on the dumps and that 25,000 tons had been blocked out in the mine. Some production in 1961. Entire production was less than 10,000 tons.
