A former Ag-Au occurrence/mine located in the SE¼ sec. 14, T27N, R20W, G&SRM, 0.5 mile S of White Hills (town), on Bureau of Land Management administered land. Past operators included W.R. Killers, C. Rosseau, and J.R. Smith. Owned by Mrs. J. C. Calhoun, White Hills Mining Company, Texas (1977). Owned by the Jordan Estate, Arizona (1977). Produced in 1941. The USGS MRDS database stated accuracy for this locality is 10 meters.

OCCIDENT AND HORN SILVER MINES.

The Occident and Horn Silver mines are about one-fourth of a mile south of town just east of the mill, mainly in the south side of an east-west ridge. They are situated near together on overlapping claims. They are both seemingly on the same vein, which is 2 to 4 feet in width, and contains chiefly reddish-brown iron-stained crushed and brecciated quartz or ore. It is steeper than the veins north of town and dips about 60N. The ore contains principally horn silver. Both mines are reported to have been heavy producers.

The country rock is the granitoid gneiss and schist complex. It dips about 30N. At the Occident mine the rock is gneissoid granite; at the Horn Silver it is gray schist.

The Occident mine is said to be 800 feet deep and to be extensively developed by drifts and stopes. A long drift to the west from the bottom of the shaft is said to penetrate much good ore. The mine produces a plentiful supply of good water. In the Horn Silver mine the vein flattens somewhat with depth and has been worked in part by inclines.


Mineralization is a vein deposit hosted in Neoproterozoic schist. The ore body dips 60N at a width of 1.22 meters. The ore is strongly oxidized. Local rocks include Quaternary surficial deposits, undivided.

Local geologic structures include schistosity that dips 30N.

Workings include underground openings with a length of 1,524 meters and an overall depth of 167.64 meters on 8 levels.

Production data: Reported in 1909 to have been a "heavy producer."
