Graphite lenses in Madrid/Smalls Falls Formations. Opened by the Oxford Mining Company in 1859. Sold in the early 1860s to Oxford Plumbago Mining Company:

"Upon the property is a large boarding-house for the miners, a blacksmith's shop, etc., etc., also a never-failing supply of water for mining and other purposes. Five veins of plumbago have been discovered, of which one only has been partially opened, and this averages from two to eighteen inches in width, with productive yield. Three other veins show at the outcrop from one to four inches wide. Another vein, 150 feet (ca. 46 m) below the others, is about three feet wide. The analyses of Drs. [Charles Thomas] Jackson and [Augustus A.] Hayes show but from six to eleven per cent of foreign matter in the ore of this mine which is granulated, and compares favorably with that of the celebrated Borrowdale mine, Cumberland Mountain, England, famed for its purity and fineness. Small cuts on high ledge on "Scriba Mountain", a southwestern extension of Plumbago-Puzzle Mountain. Land currently owned by Plumbago Timber and Quarries LLC, which permitted use of new mineral discovery information to appear on Mindat.
