Limestone deposits borbered by Potsdam sandstone. A series of three Limestone quarries, totaling 313 acres, now owned by the DePaul group. the "Hole #1", located on the northeast side of Stenton Avenue between Flourtown and Joshua Roads, the smallest of the three, was decommisioned and filled in.

Thomas Fitzwater discovered vast lime deposits on his land in Oreland.  He erected a kiln for processing, and in 1693, William Penn ordered a highway (Limekiln Pike) built from the port of the Delaware River to the kiln, one of the first roads in the area.  With subsequent deposits being discovered in Whitemarsh, lime kilns began to appear throughout the township creating its first and most noted industry. The Plymouth/Oreland Railroad lines, built to serve the Corson Quarry, by the late 19th century, helped to developed a respectable industrial base all along the corridor in Whitemarsh township. Operated by the U.S, Lime and materials Inc. until 1997, the quarry was sold to Medsa Corp., now known as the Highway Materials Quarry, and is not only the oldest continuously worked quarry in the U.S., its the oldest continuously worked industrial enterprise in the U.S.
