Weot Lime & Stone Co. Quarry
An abandoned and flooded quarry adjacent to a former New York Central Railroad line ("The Big Four"), section 17, Clinton Township, just outside the corporation limits of the city of Tiffin. The Willow Creek is directly east of the former quarry and currently the locality is owned by the Clinton Mobile Home Resort.
Due to the scarcity of available information about the locality, the quarry had been given the moniker, "The Big Four Railroad Quarry", by Joy Hintz, who worked for Heidelberg University. "The Big Four" was a nickname for the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago and St. Louis Railway which operated rail lines throughout the Midwest. The "Big Four Railroad" was acquired by the New York Central Railroad in 1906.
Historical research into the locality was revealed that the quarry was owned by brothers Frank and George Weot, who had previously owned another quarry in Tiffin which was destroyed by a catastrophic flood in 1913. Newspaper clippings and old Tiffin business directories place the years of operation of this quarry between 1915 to at least the late 1920s. It is unknown when the quarry had reached a flooded state, but it was reported by the that Charles Adams, an orphan, drowned in the quarry in 1932. Another orphan, James Blevins, drowned in the quarry two years later (Brizendine, 2018).
The cover photograph of the first edition of Minerals of Ohio shows an iridescent fluorite specimen from this specific locality (Carlson, 1991). The specimen is currently in the mineral collection at the Biology Museum, Laird Science Hall, Heidelberg College, Tiffin, Ohio. Ernest Carlson lumped this specific quarry with several other quarries around Tiffin for his book.
