Genoa Construction Co.; "Old Purtee Quarry"
The Nelson Purtee Construction Co. (Genoa Construction Co.) Quarry was a former quarry located in Genoa at the NE¼, S½, Section 4, Township 6N (Clay Township), Range 13E. The locality is referenced as the "Old Purtee Quarry" by Ernie Carlson (1983, 1991, 2015). Botoman and Steiglitz (1978) reference an "Old Genoa Quarry", though it is unknown whether they were referring to this specific locality or the larger quarry now operated by Lafarge. The quarry was privately owned by the Nelson Purtee Construction Company, which was active between the late 1940s to the late 1960s (Anonymous, 1955; Anonymous, 1965). The quarry reached a flooded state by the 1970s and was filled with construction fill and debris by the late 2000s (Green, 1970).
According to Richard Green (1970) the locality produced amber fluorite and ruby-jack sphalerite similar to those found at the nearby Genoa Quarry (at the time owned by the US Gypsum Company) and the White Rock Quarry in Clay Center.
