The Standard Slag Company leased the quarry operation from Chemstone in December 1962. They immediately added an auxiliary plant to increase the production of concrete aggregate. In 1964, two wash screens and four overhead stocking galleries with reclaiming tunnels were built to transport the washed finished products to customer docks. By April, 1967, the Marblehead Stone Division of The Standard Slag Company had completed and put into operation an automatic crushing, screening and washing facility of the latest concept and design, much of which is still in use today. In 1983, The Standard Slag Company purchased the quarry from Chemstone.
Lafarge North America took over operation of the Marblehead Quarry on October 1, 1989; through it’s acquisition of The Standard Slag Company. In 1990, Lafarge began an ambitious program to revitalize the quarry operations with an investment of $12.5 million to build the current processing plant and boat loading facility. The facility can produce fractionated stone in the following sizes: 4”, 2”, 1”, ½” and ¾”. Lafarge can blend these gradations back together to meet any custom configuration required.
