The Centennial Quarry is a flooded quarry 2 miles north of the village of Silica in Sylvania Township. The rocks exposed are the Detroit River Group.
This quarry was first described by Carman (1922) with having crystals of calcite in cavities and geology similar to the quarries south in the village of Silica. In the first edition of Minerals of Ohio by Ernest Carlson (1991), the quarry is described as an “Old Quarry”, 2 miles N of Silica and was originally uploaded as this on Mindat.
According to Kesling (1978), the Centennial Quarry was operated by a narrow gauge railroad, the Toledo Western Electric, which used the quarry rocks for building road beds. The quarry was abandoned in the 1920's.
Today the Centennial Quarry has been re-purposed as a swimming hole with scuba diving platforms and is currently operated by the Sylvania Recreation Corporation. An outdoor terrace and stage were later constructed at the site. The Centennial Quarry holds concerts in the summertime.
