An area of considerable antiquity, the top of Moel Ispri is honeycombed with workings, some (without evidence) said to date back to Roman times.

Mineralisation is generally poor; originally a lead mine, lead and copper minerals are dominant; tetrahedrite occurs in minute amounts within the galena and gold is present in small amounts.

Moel Ispri worked intermittently till 1903. Recorded output is 41 tons of lead and 202 ounces of silver in 1868, 29 tons of lead and 180 ounces of silver in 1869, 47 tons of zinc in 1890, 1/4 ton of lead and 14 ounces silver in 1891, and 50 tons of gold ore producing 85 ounces of gold in 1899.
