A former underground asbestos mine located in the S½ sec. 19, T10N, R10E, on the Salt River near (downstream of) the Salt River Canyon Campgrounds, about 5 miles W of Mule Hoof Bend, on National Forest land. Discovered 1916 and first produced 1918.
Mineralization is a linear ore body hosted in the Mescal Limestone. Asbestos-bearing serpentine zones occur at 3 horizons in nthe Lower Member of the Mescal Limestone. The predominant factor in the concentration of asbestos within the favorable beds has been the shattering and warping of these beds by a belt of thrust faulting that has a general course of 5.25°E.
