Bwlch yr Haiarn Mine


Although probably worked earlier, the first record that can definitely be attributed to the set is in 1806, the mine at that time being known as Bwlch yr Haiarn Mine. Working appeared intermittent up to 1841, with only half a ton of lead ore being recorded in 1834. Between 1853-64 a little over 10 tons of ore was raised. After 1864, working increased, with 230 tons being raised between 1864-73.

Renamed Llanrwst Mine in 1873, the workforce was increased from only a handful at that time to 95 in 1880, at which time the company failed, the mine passing to a new company in 1881. Although initially promising, 300 tons of ore being raised in 1882, the production and the workforce soon dropped back and by 1884 the mine was on care and maintenance with only one man working. In 1887 the plant and machinery was sold.

Although the set was leased by various people at various times during the 20th Century, nothing of note was done.

In the 1950s, the workings were cut by those of the nearby Parc Mine, but nothing was done to develop the mine further.
