This small mine is belived to have been first worked about 1720. Blaenceulan mine developed the wastern extention of the Esgair Hir vein/fualt where it diverges in to a number of small strings and veins. The next recorded working was in 1852-54, and again in 1868-76, finally from 1878-84. The best ore appears to have been mined around 1870. Recorded output is 438 tons of lead ore, 18 tons of copper ore, and 7 tons of zinc ore. There where trials for barite on the opposite side of the valley which came to nothing.

The main workings are quite evident including a large tip, at least 2 wheelpits and an adit near the footpath up through the valley. The tips contain abundant galena in massive pieces as large as the palm of an adult hand.

Following the stream up the valley there is a small reservoir with a substantial, but now breached dam. A long spoil heap banks the stream and appears at first to have been the product of an adit, however this may in fact have been from a shallow open gunnis that runs at 90 degrees to the valley or was perhaps an adit now collapsed. On the opposite bank of the stream there appears to be a small spoil heap. In the valley side is a collapsed adit and spoil heap. Further up the valley another collapsed adit with shallow linear, grassed over spoil heap. Finally towards the top of the valley is a prominent spoil heap (which contains barite) a flooded adit entrance above which is a scar in the valley side which is possibly the result of a collapsed stope. On an apparent line with this above the road is a gulley in the hillside which was possibly an open work. Looking back across the valley high up on the hillside is a patch of brown 'scree' next to a small tributary stream which has all the appearance of a small spoil heap.
