A former underground Cu-Ag-Au-Pb-Zn mine located in the N½ sec. 31, T2S, R14E (Sonora 7.5 minute topo map), about ¾ mile ESE of Hot Tamale Peak, 1.6 miles N of Scott Mountain and about 3½ miles NE of Ray, on state land. This property consists of 16 contiguous mining claims, the claim names are: Cumberland, Merrimac, Richmond, Richmond Annex, Monitor, Tucson, Mountain Maid, Admiral Dewey, Stare, Black Eagle, Lincoln, Tip Top, Woodrow Wilson, and the Silver Canyon Nos. 1,2,3. Produced 1944-1978.
Mineralization is a 7 foot (1.83 meter) wide vein deposit hosted in Dripping Springs Quartzite and Mescal Limestone with a tabular ore body. Ore control was veins in rhyodacite porphyry. Area structures include N-S and NE-trending falting. The NE-trending faults are extension of the Rustler Fault System, extending NE from Ray. Mineralization includes secondary copper minerals. The age of mineralization is the same as that of the Ray Mine and the rhyodacite porphyry is also of the same age.
Workings include several openings. The group of claims is thoroughly prospected by tunnels, shafts, drifts, winzes, and discovery cuts. About 2500 feet of underground work has been completed on the properties. The Monitor Mine is the most extensively developed of the group. The sgaft was sunk on the central vein of the claim. South of the main shaft, another shaft was sunk about 20 feet. Also present on the Monitor claim are 3 snall surface cuts and two other tunnels. Various shafts and underground workings have been done on the Richmond, Dewey, Tucson, Mountain View, Cumberland and Merrimac claims. Some sources refer to these claims as mines, i.e., Dewey Mine, Merrimac Mine, etc.
