One of the major specimen-producing mines in the West Cumbrian (formerly Cumberland) Iron Field. The principal ore mineral recovered was hematite. The main period of activity for most mines in the orefield was mid-19th to early 20th centuries, though some mines in the southern portion of the district including the Florence-Beckrmet-Ullcoats complex and Halle Moor Mine continued into the latter 20th century.
