The mine was once the largest molybdenum mine in Europe.
It started as a small prospect at the outcrop "Blyantberget" (the pencil rock) in 1885-1887. From 1895 a larger scale mining started which stopped in 1909. In 1909 the mine had produced a total of 228729 kg of molybdenite. The mining operation started again in 1913 and lasted until 1917. In 1914 the mining company, A/S Knaben Molybdængruber took over the production until 1939.
Large masses of molybdenite up to 5 tons were found here. In 1914 a ore mass which weighed 9 tons with 90 % molybdenite was found.
The estimated total production of the mine in the period 1885-1939 is about 570000 kg of molybdenite.
