Dead Rabbit
Historic gold mine.
The claim was one of the gold discovery sites by the Neeld family. It was the second discovery after the nearby Pioneer claim to the west. One of the Neeld boys had shot a rabbit for lunch and shortly after discovered gold at the location, naming the claim the Dead Rabbit. It was later changed to Easter Gift, a name viewed as more becoming of a gold mine.
Part of the east-west striking Pioneer line of lode. The claim was not the richest of the Neeld discoveries. The quartz reef was split with much mullock and gold grades were patchy. Intermittent crushings eminated from the mine across 1894-1908. The best gold appeared to go below the water line into hard granite, and the miners operating the mine did not have the capital for the equipment to reach the reefs.
