Historic gold mine.
Frederick Neeld and his family had moved to the mallee scrub of the Wyalong area to take up a 2,650 acre property of crown land. At that stage Wyalong did not exist, and the location was called White Tank, after the only water supply in the area. Frederick Neeld and his boys on 10 September 1893 were out inspecting the new boundary fence, when one picked up a rock with gold in it turfed up from a suveryor trench. That site was pegged as the Pioneer claim. The Neeld family went on to peg several other leases in the area, including their rich Neeld mine which earned them a fortune, caused a gold rush, established the West Wyalong Goldfield, and was the catalyst to the formation of the West Wyalong and Wyalong towns.
The lease gave its name to the Pioneer line of lode, the only one on the goldfield stiking east-west rather than north north-east, and located at the eastern edge of the goldfield.
The goldfield was declared in March 1894, and the Neelds aleady had the shaft down to 35 feet on a reef 6-9 inches wide. One crushing had been sent off achieving 17 tonnes of ore for 72 oz Au. There was very little alluvial gold on the goldfield, although the Neelds obtained 0.5 oz Au from two buckets of wash from the claim at this time. July 1894 the crushing was 34 tons for 110 oz Au. The reef was very rich in the upper levels. After a few months when this had been exploited, the Neelds let the mine to a series of tributors for the next ten years, while they concentrated on their major Neeld mine elsewhere on the goldfield.
