The Fox Creek Quarry was developed in massive Paleozoic marine limestone, probably Madison Group or equivalent Mississippian carbonate, exposed in lower Fox Creek Canyon on the western flank of the Teton Basin. Host rock is high-purity calcite-dominant limestone historically worked for lime; acid testing of multiple patches shows strong fizz & no evidence of dolomite in sampled material. Silica occurs as banded chert formed by carbonate replacement, & quartz occurs in fractures & small vugs with minor quartz crystals observed. Late-stage groundwater circulation produced small scalenohedral calcite crystals lining cavities & fractures. Orange→orange-brown staining along fractures & exposed surfaces occurs as thin diffuse films consistent with Fe-oxide/hydroxide staining; no crusts or discrete Fe-mineral masses observed. Observed materials include limestone, banded chert (micro-crystalline quartz), calcite, & quartz, consistent with silica replacement & late fracture mineralization typical of Mississippian carbonate units.
The article “The Fox Creek Quarry” (Snake River Echoes) describes the limestone quarry as being in the Fox Creek drainage, Teton County, ID, worked for high-purity lime rock reported at ~95-97% CaCO3. The stone is massive marine limestone quarried from bedrock exposed in lower Fox Creek Canyon & used primarily for sugar processing; lithology & purity are consistent with calcite-dominant Mississippian carbonate.
Operations ceased in 1979.
Note: The Snake River Echoes reference indicates that the quarry is in fact across the State border in Wyoming (Elliott) . Also, the coordinates listed in the MRDS file 10133372 are inaccurate.
