An U-V occurrence/mine located in the SW¼ sec. 2, T37N, R29E, G&SRM, 0.9 km (0.5 mile) NW of Cove Mesa (coordinates of record) (on the SW rim of the mesa). The USGS MRDS stated accuracy for this location is 500 meters. NOTE: The U file locates this property in sec. 31, T11N, R7W. U.S. Atomic Energy Commission acquired lease from the Manhattan Project and contracted with Vanadium Corporation of America to mine the area.
Mineralization is an U deposit with ore in irregular, tabular layers 0.91 meter thick hosted in Late Jurassic claystone, siltstone and sandstone of the Salt Wash Member of the Morrison Formation. The ore is found in clusters, usually associated with carbonaceous detritus. Mineralization occurs 30 to 95 feet above the Bluff Sandstone contact. Local rocks include rocks of the San Rafael Group. Tyuyamunite and vanadium minerals disseminated in thin-bedded, cross-bedded, fine-grain, gray calcareous sandstone, Salt Wash member.
Workings include numerous inclines from the mesa top and adits from the mesa rim.
Production was 35,963 tons @0.22% U3O8; 1.61% V2O5 (1948-1965 continuous).
